    A message from the Taoiseach The more Ireland trades with the world the more prosperous our society becomes. The opening up of the Irish economy in the past 50 years has transformed our country beyond recognition. Instead of turning inward we need to redouble our efforts to help Irish business trade more into Europe and across the world. Traditionally, the topic has been preoccupied with considerations about trade unions. The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) is the trade union federation and largest civil society organisation on the island of Ireland representing and campaigning on behalf of someworking people. There are currently 55 unions affiliated to Congress, north and south of the border.
